Twitch Subscription Gifting is finally here! First announced at the TwitchCon 2017 Keynote, gifting subs to friends has easily been the most requested feature on the platform for quite some time so naturally, the community was ecstatic to find out that it was coming within the month. If you’re one of the many people who have been waiting for this, here’s how it works:
As you are watching one of your favorite streamers and you see a pal or friendly community member in the chat who deserves a subscription, you can gift the sub in a couple of ways.
The first method is via the recipient’s profile. First, click on their name in chat and have their profile bubble appear. Click on the “Gift Subscription” button under their username, choose any subscription tier you’d like to give, and continue with the purchase.
The second method is to click the Subscribe drop-down menu and click the “Gift a Subscription” button above the stream window. You will be prompted to select a subscription tier and then type in the username of the recipient in order to process the payment.
Once the payment fully processes for the gift, a message will appear in chat stating who received the subscription from which viewer for the entire stream to see. If you are the recipient of the gift, you will receive a message in your Notifications box of the subscription as well.
A gifted subscription will act identically to any other subscription. The user will have access to the channel’s emotes, have a sub badge, and can continue their subscription streak. Although you can not purchase a recurring subscription model for the recipient, subscription gifts are currently one month only, they can receive a new gifted subscription after the initial month is over or can purchase the subscription themselves to maintain their sub-streak.
There are a few restrictions that you should be aware of before jumping into this. Currently, Subscription Gifting is not available on the mobile site or the iOS/Android apps so it is only possible from your desktop and you can not gift a subscription to someone who is already subscribed to the channel. You can not use your Twitch Prime sub as a gift and all gifted subscription purchases are final, so no refunds will be provided in order to protect the streamer from being denied the support.
Other than that, it looks like this will clearly be one of Twitch’s most popular additions yet. Subscription gifting is live now, so go show your friends, community members, and favorite streamers your support!
